OcthoMind – Thinking visually without boundaries
Crafted a gesture-rich mind mapping environment that unifies non-linear brainstorming with structured hierarchical outlining—grounded in zero-knowledge local storage.
Overview
Complex ideas rarely develop in neat vertical lists. Creators, researchers, and students think spatially—connecting hypotheses, linking evidence, and restructuring concepts. OcthoMind is an iOS/iPadOS mind mapping application engineered to provide fluid canvas navigation, instant branch spawning, and zero-compromise privacy without locking users into expensive SaaS subscription clouds.
Problem / Goal
- Cloud Lock-In & Privacy Anxiety: Most modern mind mapping tools force cloud synchronization, raising concerns for confidential research notes, business models, and private journals.
- Canvas Clutter vs. Structured Outlines: Spatial brainstorming often leads to messy spiderwebs where structural hierarchy gets lost. Users need dual perspectives: freeform nodes and linear outlines.
- Mobile Touch Precision: Manipulating dense node hierarchies on smaller iPhone glass screens frequently triggers mis-taps and accidental node disconnections.
My Role
Designed the gesture physics, node auto-layout algorithms, dual outline/canvas view architecture, and dark-mode visual hierarchy.
Constraints
Ensuring instantaneous pan/zoom responsiveness with 500+ nodes while storing all trees securely in local sandboxed storage.
Process
- Radial & Tree Interaction Models: Designed fluid parent-child anchoring that dynamically shifts branch vectors based on screen borders, preventing node overlap during rapid ideation.
- Dual Perspective Mode: Implemented a single-tap toggle switching between the visual 2D node cosmos and a nested markdown-style collapsible outline.
- Tactile Node Spawning: Created a spring-loaded drag gesture from any node boundary that pulls out a child branch with immediate keyboard focus, minimizing tap fatigue.
- High-Resolution Vector Export: Built export pipelines for razor-sharp SVG, PNG, and multi-page PDF documents for seamless insertion into decks and academic papers.
Outcomes
- Zero-Friction Brainstorming: Users create comprehensive multi-branch maps with 3x fewer taps compared to legacy desktop ports.
- High Retention in Education & Tech: Strong adoption among software architects planning systems and students summarizing exam syllabi.
- Privacy Assurance: 100% offline-ready capability resonated with security-conscious professionals handling proprietary strategic plans.
