Case Study
PixRGBCatch – Fastest way to capture color around you
Designed an instant camera-to-palette companion for designers and artists that inspects live pixel values, computes harmony palettes, and keeps all image data 100% on-device.
Overview
Designers constantly spot shades in everyday life—in nature, architecture, print, or apparel—that inspire new work. Yet extracting accurate color codes usually requires snapping a photo, importing it into desktop software, and using a dropper. PixRGBCatch eliminates that friction by turning the iPhone camera into a real-time color lab with tactile micro-interactions and one-tap exports.
Problem / Goal
- Mobile Dropper Latency: Traditional color picker apps require snapping pictures first, resulting in multi-step fatigue. We needed zero-lag, real-time live viewfinder sampling.
- Color Precision & Lighting Noise: Single sensor pixels fluctuate under artificial lighting. We required dual-mode sampling: sharp single-point reticle or averaged area blur.
- Multi-Format Utility: Designers need more than just HEX codes; they need RGB, HSL, CMYK, and automated harmony combinations (complementary, split, triadic) ready for production.
- Absolute Privacy: Users point cameras at proprietary mockups and physical surroundings. All processing had to remain strictly on-device without cloud uploads.
My Role
Led end-to-end design, camera HUD layout, haptic feedback curves, color harmony visualization, and Product Hunt launch assets.
Constraints
60 FPS live camera feed analysis without thermal throttling or battery drain, paired with zero tracking permissions.
Process
- Heuristic Viewfinder UX: Positioned the reticle in the thumb's natural sweep zone. Implemented a dynamic zoom loupe that magnifies the target area for sub-millimeter precision.
- Dual-Action Interaction: Designed a single-tap action for instant spot sampling and long-press for area-average calculation with affirmative haptic click.
- Palette Builder & Color Harmony: Integrated real-time algorithmic generation of complementary, analogous, triadic, and monochromatic schemes saved into custom named decks.
- High-Contrast Card System: Built an adaptive UI that computes contrast ratios on the fly, ensuring text and badges remain readable over bright neon, pastel, or deep obsidian swatches.
Outcomes
- Featured on Product Hunt & Smol Launch: Gained immediate international traction from digital illustrators, frontend engineers, and interior decorators.
- Instant Workflow Adoption: Users build complete 5-color palettes in under 30 seconds straight from camera exploration.
- Clean Privacy Profile: 100% on-device architecture achieved rapid App Store approval with zero third-party telemetry.
