Case Study

VitalSync – Physiological Recovery & Readiness

Designed an intelligent body recovery and strain monitoring experience for Apple Watch and iPhone, translating complex heart rate variability (HRV), wrist temperature, and sleep cycles into a unified daily readiness score.

Role: Product Designer & iOS Architect Timeline: 4 weeks Status: Live on App Store (iOS & watchOS)

Overview

Smartwatches collect millions of raw health data points, but users are often left confused by complex charts without actionable takeaways. VitalSync bridges this gap by calculating a proprietary Daily Recovery Score based on overnight wrist temperature variance, resting heart rate (RHR), and HRV balance—telling users exactly when to push their limits and when to rest.

Problem / Goal

My Role

Designed the full watchOS and iOS companion interfaces, metric scoring algorithms, interactive gauge dials, and Apple HealthKit privacy-first integration.

Constraints

Strict Apple HealthKit data security standards, zero cloud telemetry, watchOS complication optimizations, and instant widget loading states.

Process

  1. Score Synthesis: Developed a clear 0–100% color-coded circular recovery gauge (Optimal, Moderate, Rest Required) that updates each morning.
  2. Wrist Temperature Trending: Visualized multi-day baseline shifts to help users detect early signs of illness, physical overtraining, or sleep disruption.
  3. Modular Widgets & Complications: Designed Lock Screen widgets and Apple Watch face complications for instant status checks without opening the app.
  4. 100% On-Device Security: Architected the entire data pipeline to remain strictly on the user's iPhone and Apple Watch with no external servers.
